Competitor Monitoring: The Grocer's Top 50 Independent Retailers
Now in its 10th year, The Grocer's annual ranking of the UK's Top 50 Independent Retailers highlights the strong sales growth of cut-price retailers such as Aldi and Lidl in the market as consumers hunt for bargains.
The Grocer’s UK Top 50 Independent Retailers Report details the 50 biggest British grocery retailers that are more than 50 per cent owned by management or family. The latest Top 50 independent retailers recorded sales growth of 8 per cent to £8.7 billion in 2011. Pre-tax profits increased by 24 per cent to £280 million while profit margins were up from 2.8 per cent to 3.2 per cent.
As well as drawing attention to Aldi and Lidl, The Grocer's latest research flags the growth of UK discount businesses such as B&M Retail, Farmfoods and TJ Morris in the independent grocery trade. Six of the top ten are discount stores; they are responsible for half of all the turnover in the top 50 listing, and two-thirds of all profits. Other high achievers include the discounters 99p Stores, Poundstretcher and Wilkinson following its recent entry into the grocery industry.
