Competitor Monitoring: M&S Irish Online Store Now Open

Upmarket retailer Marks and Spencer launched its Irish website this morning.

The news is sure to encourage more retailers operating in Ireland to go online in 2012 to capture some of the growth in this area.

The M&S website offers products across women’s clothing, lingerie, men’s clothing and children’s clothing, along with a selection of homeware products. Delivery prices range from €4.95 for standard delivery to €9.95 for express delivery. For those who signed up to the M&S Irish newsletter, a ten per cent discount is being offered on their online orders.

“Over the last 30 years customers across Ireland have grown to know and love M&S,” said Jonathan Glenister, head of Marks & Spencer Ireland. "The website has been long awaited and it’s great news that customers will enjoy the convenience of shopping with M&S at anytime and anywhere.”

“With thousands of stylish items available, our eagerly awaited new website is now our biggest clothing store in Ireland," he continued. "Its launch means our busy customers can shop with us 24/7 - with the added benefit of having their purchases delivered straight to their door.”

With online shopping worth approximately €3.5 billion to the Irish economy, Profitero welcomes the news that retailers such as Marks and Spencer are going online in Ireland. “One area of retail that is outperforming all others right now is online. Traditional brick-and-mortar retailers really need to be online to capture some of this growth,” said Vol Pigrukh, CEO and co-founder of Profitero.

As well as the Internet providing a new avenue to attract customers, retailers moving to a multichannel structure have the added advantage of being able to monitor their competitors’ prices online, and react quickly to changes in these pricing strategies. “If their prices are too high, they’re losing out on sales and if their prices are too low, they’re leaving money on the table – so these are the two key scenarios where they really need to manage their prices better,” said Pigrukh.

Competitor price monitoring technology such as Profitero provides retailers with up-to-date competition pricing intelligence, shipping charges and out-of-stock information; this allows retailers to benchmark their prices against those of their competitors with ease.
